How to Track IRS, New York, and California Tax Refunds
The Fastest Way to Check Your Refund
Refreshing your bank account won’t speed anything up, but using the right tracking tool will at least tell you where things stand. The IRS and each state tax agency have their own online tracker, and they don’t all update at the same speed. Original refunds, amended refunds, and state refunds each have a separate process.
Start with Your IRS Online Account
Before using any refund tracker, sign into your IRS Online Account. It pulls directly from IRS systems, so it sometimes reflects updates sooner than the standard tracking tools. It also shows processed returns, payment history, balance details, and alerts about issues that might be holding things up.

Tracking an IRS Refund on an Original Return
The IRS directs taxpayers to the official Where’s My Refund? tool. Status is usually available about 24 hours after e-filing a current-year return, about 3 days after e-filing a prior-year return, or about 4 weeks after mailing a paper return.
You’ll need your Social Security number or ITIN, filing status, exact refund amount from the return, and the tax year.

Tracking an Amended Return Refund (Form 1040-X)
Don’t use the standard refund tracker for an amended return — it won’t show anything useful. The IRS has a separate Where’s My Amended Return? tool. Status usually appears about 3 weeks after filing, and processing takes 8 to 12 weeks in most cases.

Why Refunds Get Delayed
The usual suspects: paper filing, identity verification flags, missing or mismatched information, direct deposit entry errors, income document mismatches, refundable credit review, amended return processing, or plain agency backlogs. The most common mistake taxpayers make is calling too early.
One delay that catches people off guard: if your refund involves income reported on Form 1042-S (for example, agency withholding on income paid to nonresident aliens), IRS refunds tied to Form 1042-S withholding can take up to six months. That timeline applies even when the return itself was filed and accepted promptly.

Before You Check, Make Sure You Have These Ready
The exact refund amount from the filed return, the correct tax year, the correct filing status, whether the return was original or amended, and whether it was filed electronically or by mail. Without these details, the tracking tools won’t return useful results.
